Did you use an outside firm or Web designer to develop your site? If so, what factors led you to choose your site designer?
I used PBHS because it has the patient medical history/registration form that will integrate directly into Perio-Exec software. The patients can fill out the forms online, press submit and the form is sent securely to a database for upload directly into the practice software. In Austin, TX most folks are highly computer savvy and this method is preferred by many. Of course the patient can also fill out a paper version at our office or complete the form, print at home, and hand carry with them to their initial visit. It is also a nice feature whereby referring dentists can submit a referral via the website and the referral is again sent to us in secure format for contacting the referred patient. I also chose PHBS by talking to other satisfied customers that used their company and viewing the quality of their websites.
At the start of the development process, what were you asked to provide, and what did the designer do to get your site up and running?
I met with the PBHS representative and they asked a number of questions and showed me various sites that had different themes. They had content for the various pages and I modified it for my personal touch. They also provided the portraits of the people on the homepage. After submitting the information the designer worked with me allowing me to view a proof of the page until it was exactly what I wanted. PBHS was great in accommodating my desires and working with me.
Where did you get the text and images for your site? Did you adapt material used for other purposes in your practice, or was content developed especially for the site?
Some of the images except for the portraits of people on the homepage were mine. Obviously some of the graphics and flash presentations (ie perio modules, implant modules, human touch modules) were provided by PBHS as well. I personalized the write-up to portray what I hope my practice will become. I did modify and add additional pages to include case studies, etc.
What overall impression of your practice do you want to give a first-time visitor to your site?
My vision was that the patient that viewed the website would find a site that gave a feeling of professionalism, information, quality, and caring.
What feedback on your site have you received from patients? What features have they commented on?
Most colleagues I have shown the website liked the human touch modules and my case studies. One made comment that she really liked the meet the doctor section.
What features of your site have you and your staff found most helpful in serving patients?
Since we havent opened the doors to the private practice yet (hopeful opening date of 1 Dec), this question is a difficult one. I will soon be retiring from the Army and the construction of my building is in the process. I have used the site to explain periodontal disease and implants to my Army patients and they really enjoyed and seemed to understand more about periodontal procedures and implants prior to initiating treatment.
What have you done to let people know about your site and encourage them to visit it?
Thus far, I have told my residents (AEGD/2) and my friends and periodontal colleagues about the website. All have had extremely positive comments. The website is included in my email signature card as well as on my business cards. My hope is that as many people will see it as possible. As past Consultant to The Army Surgeon General in Periodontics, my task is to help as many dentists and patients learn more about the importance of periodontal therapy and implants. The AAP has been doing a marvelous job of doing this over the last few years. I hope my website will augment what has been started by others.
What advice do you have for a colleague who's starting to plan a practice Web site?
I guess my advice would be to look at many websites and extract what you like from each. Assemble your vision in what you want to portray. Once those two legs of the tripod have been completed, start working with a quality experienced web design company. Thats why I choose PBHS.
